This ½ term’s school value is…

We are Adventurous.

We’re lucky to live in a truly beautiful part of the world. We give our children a loving, nurturing space in which to take risks, feel free and get a taste for a life full of adventures.

‘Encourage one another, and build each other up.’  (1 Thessalonians 5 v1)

Attendance so far…

School average for this week
Class 1: 96.9%
Class 2: 97% Class 3: 93.8% Class 4: 96.6%
School average…  for the year so far is 95.3

Ofsted expect attendance to be in the high 96+%.
We started the summer term really well with 2 days of 100% attendance.  As you can see even a day of illness here and there and the figures drop.
We know you cannot  help being ill and home is the best place when that is the case,  we just want you to be aware of the disruption to your child, potentially the class if your child needs extra on their return, and the overall figures.

(Please have a look at our Attendance page on our website for more information.)

Our Collective Worship this week focussed on Encouraging one another.  This is embedded in our School Value for the half-term, that of us Being Adventurous.

This week, we spent some time thinking about making the right decisions with our behaviour, making sure we said sorry for anything that we may have done wrong, and we also focussed on listening to and forgiving the person that apologised.   All of the children said they wanted others to apologise to them if something went wrong or they were hurt, and it was lovely to hear the children tell me that it was important to forgive or be forgiven, and to ‘start again’.

Next Friday, 5th May… Coronation Celebration… The Village Playing Field… Maypole at about 2.45…  all children to be picked up from the playing field.

Georgeham Parish Council have asked us if we could help with the Coronation Celebration at the Playing Field next Friday – hence the Maypole has been on the front playground for the past few weeks.  Practice is going well!  There will be dancing around the Maypole, Class 3 will be doing the Broom Dance and the choir will do something too.  We will aim for a 2.45 start.  All children, including Preschool, are to be picked up from the Playing field at 3.15, but do of course feel free to stay on and join in the celebrations.

I’ve been told that the Coronation Tea Event will be much the same as last with various stalls, tombola, face painting and coconut shy, as well as free refreshments.   There will also be a donation bucket in support of the Hospice, but the Parish Council would like families to know that the cakes and drinks are free without obligation.

The Parish Council are also using the opportunity to engage with children and families with research into what they should do to refurbish the play area.  There will be a table for children to draw and write their opinions of what they think of the park.   Have a think on these questions… How often do you play in the park?  What are your favourite things to do in the park?  Do you feel safe in the park?  And, what would like to see in the park?

There are also TWO weekend Coronation Celebrations taking place on the weekend… here’s some more information!

It’s lovely to report that Fullabrook’s School Enrichment Fund has allocated us a grant of £638 that we’ll be putting towards replenishing our stock of Chromebooks.  Children use the Chromebooks daily for various activities and this will help this to continue since several of them are starting to come to the end of their life, and not starting up!

Thanks also to FROGS who are allocating some of their resources to supporting our Chromebook stock!

Talking of which … the FROGS disco raised almost £500 to support funds and capacity to support education and activity for our school.  Funding for schools is extremely tight nowadays, and schools need all the help they can get. Thank you.

HUGE well done to Isla and Kitty for asking about and helping to set up th Disco!

Next Week:
Tuesday – This is the second of the two planned strike days by the NEU.  Preschool will be open on that day.   I really am grateful for your understanding and patience with these decisions.

We’re a Nut free school, so that means that most kinds of tree nuts (such as almonds, cashews, hazelnuts, pine nuts) and also peanuts shouldn’t be brought in to school. Sadly, this also means that pesto sauce shouldn’t be brought into school as it contains pine nuts. Sorry if this causes any inconvenience, but I hope you can help us as best as you can to keep our children safe.

Attendance We frequently report the attendance of individual year groups as it’s a really good way to see if school attendance is at a good percentage… with it as high as possible of course! The DfE have a target of 96.5% but sadly, we finished the year, last July, being slightly below this.
Attending school regularly is vital to help children achieve and to give them the best possible start in life. It’s also a legal requirement of parents once children are of school age and enrolled in mainstream education. Ofsted has a strong view about attendance of course and, therefore, too many absences can lead into difficult discussions about how we can support children to achieve and do well – we could even be downgraded for our current Good status as a result.
Absences will only be authorised if they meet exceptional circumstances. With only 190 statutory school days in the year, there are 175 days (weekends and school holidays) left to plan for family visits, non-urgent medical/dental appointments, holidays etc. School holidays are published well in advance and parents are expected to plan and take family holidays at this time so as not to disrupt their child’s education. We also try to arrange our Inset (training) days to provide time for travel… such as this term’s October 21st.
Holidays… are almost always not recognised as meeting ‘exceptional circumstances’ and therefore an absence would be unauthorised. This could result in a penalty notice being issued by DCC.
Punctuality is important too, and the earlier we get our children into the right habits, the better. You may not realise that being just 5 minutes late every day equals 3 days of school lost a year. Please bring your child for 8.45am when they door is open and the classroom has a learning activity ready for them.
