Spirituality at Georgeham

At Georgeham CofE Primary School, we understand spirituality as something unseen yet deeply felt — a sense of purpose, identity, and place in the world. It involves experiencing awe and wonder in the world around us, asking meaningful questions, drawing inspiration, and being aware of something greater than ourselves.

We also recognise that spirituality is not the same as having a particular faith or religion; a person can be deeply spiritual without belonging to a specific religious tradition.

To help our children explore this, we use our ‘Rings of Spirituality’, which guide pupils in reflecting on:

  • Ourselves – understanding our feelings, thoughts, values, and aspirations.
  • Those around us – building empathy, compassion, and connection with others.
  • The wider world – appreciating nature, community, culture, and global diversity.
  • The great beyond – contemplating big questions about life, the universe, and mysteries we cannot yet explain.

When we explain spirituality to our pupils, we talk about these rings as a way to look outward and inward, helping them grow in curiosity, understanding, and wonder.

At Georgeham CofE Primary School, we nurture children’s spiritual growth through everything we do—both in the classroom and beyond it. We place great value on positive relationships, shared values, and the development of thoughtful, curious learners. Alongside knowledge and skills, we support children in forming attitudes that help them understand themselves and the world around them.

We create opportunities for children to:

  • Share their own thoughts and beliefs, listen to the perspectives of others, and express feelings and ideas through conversation, storytelling and reflection.

  • Begin shaping their own way of seeing the world, which may include religious belief but doesn’t depend on it.

  • Develop a genuine enjoyment of learning by celebrating curiosity, encouraging exploration, and supporting play, investigation and adventure.

  • Pause to notice the world around them, responding with awe and wonder to nature, creativity, and human achievement.

  • Consider the experiences of others, using stories, drama and role-play to understand different viewpoints and life situations.

  • Immerse themselves in a rich variety of music, art, drama, dance and literature, helping them to appreciate beauty, imagination and expression.

These experiences help our pupils grow in confidence, compassion and curiosity—key elements of the spiritual journey we support at Georgeham.
